Questions and answers

About learning Norwegian in Voss, the Ukrainian community and how we work. Didn’t find your answer? Write to us.

How can I learn Norwegian in Voss quickly and affordably?

Join the UKKS Sunday Norwegian club in Voss: about two hours every Sunday of grammar, vocabulary, speaking, reading and listening, for any level. Membership costs from 250 kr a month (4–5 classes) or 70 kr for a single class. Between meetings you learn on our online platform — lessons with exercises, checked texts, a dictionary and word practice are included. What works fastest is regularity: a class every week and 10–15 minutes a day on the platform.

Can I learn Norwegian for free?

Yes, partly. The trial lesson on our platform is open without signing in or paying: exercises, the dictionary and word practice. UKKS events and our Telegram group are free language practice among friends. If you are entitled to Norwegian classes from the municipality, do use them — our club complements them well with live practice, and membership costs from 250 kr a month.

Is there an active Ukrainian community in Voss?

Yes. Ukrainsk kultur- og kunnskapssenter (UKKS) is a non-profit organisation in Voss (org. no. 936 220 428) that brings Ukrainians and Norwegians together. The Sunday Norwegian club meets every week, we hold concerts, celebrations and meetups, brought Ukrainian books to Voss bibliotek, and post news and invitations on the website, Facebook and our Telegram group.

Where can Ukrainians in Voss meet and get to know each other?

Every Sunday at the Sunday Norwegian club at Vossabakst (Vangsgata 38, Vossevangen). Also at our concerts, celebrations and meetups — see the news feed for dates. Our Telegram group is the quickest way to hear about everything.

Which Norwegian should I learn in Voss — Nynorsk or Bokmål?

Voss kommune writes in Nynorsk, so our club’s materials are in Nynorsk. The dictionary on the platform shows both written forms, so you will understand Bokmål too. People in Voss speak the local dialect — you hear it at classes and events.

What level is the Sunday club for? I am a beginner.

For any level — beginners and those who want to speak with more confidence. One group with tasks at different levels, no exams and no grades. The club is led by Maria Rodina.

Can I learn Norwegian online, from home?

Yes. The UKKS platform works on phone and computer: each meeting’s materials with exercises, checks of your texts, a dictionary with word forms and practice so the words stick. You can install it on your phone like an app. For club members it is included in the membership.

How do I get to the club if there are no buses?

We can pick you up and drive you home within 15 km of the club — just arrange it with us in advance.

What does UKKS do besides language classes?

We keep and share Ukrainian culture in Voss: concerts, Independence Day, the Day of Ukrainian Writing, meetups and trips. We help newcomers settle in Norway, write plain-language articles about economics and society, and collect Ukrainian books for the library.

How can I support the Ukrainian community in Voss?

Become a patron — a one-time or monthly gift online, and your name joins those who keep the community going. A business can become a partner: with a venue, a discount for patrons, services or money. You can also volunteer at events.

How do I contact UKKS?

Email [email protected] or call +47 968 52 389. Address: Vangsgata 31, 5700 Voss. We are also on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Telegram.
